Carla Marie Bratt: child, adult, wife, mother, business owner,
animal devotee, mesmerized by the sea and addicted to the arts.
She says she became an artist "to explain all of the above."
Born in Colorado, Carla moved to California's
Central Valley and then
to the Bay Area when she was a young child. She has been involved with
art and the printing industry almost all of her life. In 1984 she set up
her own studio and named it Laughing Fish Studios. It was there
that she has pursued gourd art, egg carving and fish printing.
Her handcrafted gourds and eggs reflect random thoughts,
quiet reflections, explosive epiphanies and simple delights.
The timelessness of a Navajo rug, the sea on a stormy day, or even
life's sometimes unnoticeable particularities give inspiration
to her work; perhaps she was struck by the glimmering
color of a small child's eye or the laughable antics of a
cherished pet. Each piece Carla produces attempts
to capture a moment in the mind's eye: a splash of color,
the smoothness of polished abalone or a flash of a
bird's feather.
She hopes her art brings you joy, beauty, and laughter.
