Commission work can be a tricky thing, for both the artist and the client. It is an endeavor that in reality is a collaboration between two people who under most circumstances have never met and must create together, a piece of art that is mutually satisfying on multiple levels.
That being said, I actually enjoy doing commission work. I like the interchange between myself and the client. There is a special energy and creativeness to the process that makes all of the hurdles worth while. My best commission work is done for a client that has a somewhat cohesive vision of what they want, that can express that vision in a relatively clear manner and understands the ebb and flow of what “artistic license” means….in other words….sometimes a design is possible and sometimes not. I never repeat work exactly in the same way and each medium has its own limitations.
Six to eight weeks is the normal turn around time for a commissioned piece to be delivered. I may have to research a subject, purchase special materials or find the right size and shape gourd, fish, or canvas. I require an initial deposit and a simple signed contract for all commissioned work, as well as “sign offs” on all submitted sketches or layouts. Any delay in “signing off” sketch work can result in a delivery delay, since my commission work is tightly scheduled around my various gallery requirements. Deposit amounts are determined by the size of the project, its intricacy and its material needs. 30% of the quoted final price is the normal deposit rate, non refundable after all final sketches are signed off and any special materials have been ordered and delivered. Any issues that may arise during a commission are addressed promptly, with my client’s personal and creative needs always kept in mind.
Visions and dreams….that is what art is always about. What are yours? Maybe it’s time to explore them.
