Copyright
There is a legal definition for copy right infringement. That particular definition can be found below. However, I have my own definition for copy right infringement that I wish to share with you. My words are not meant to be accusatory , but rather to act as my own moral compass. I have worked very hard for twenty some years to develop my artistic talent; to find my own creative “inner voice”. The road has been long with both exciting successes and huge failures. I’ve spent time and money experimenting with different materials, taking workshops and classes, creating my own medium formulas, glazes and pigments.
I’ve mustered up the courage to submit my work to galleries and retail shops, holding my breath while my work was being juried. Every spare hour and dime has been used in becoming a committed professional , whose work is individual, unique ; originating from my heart and soul. I have and still do spend late nights designing my own business cards, brochures, postcards, and portfolios. A vacation for me is visiting a museum or attending a new art show. My life is dedicated to the arts. I am neither flattered , nor happy to see any of my work or business items reproduced in any way, by anybody, at anytime, for any reason. I am not speaking of the art that is reproduced en mass during a workshop or class. I am not speaking of the new artist using another more established, experienced artist’s work for inspiration, giving credit when credit is due. Or of “patterned” artwork that is offered for sale by an artists via the internet to those who don’t choose to create original artwork. Furthermore, I have no problem with artists incorporating historically correct cultural icons, colors or images as a means of enhancing one’s own artistic concepts, constructs, and visions . With the exception of the latter, I also feel that these copied items mentioned above should never be considered for “one of a kind” gallery submissions, entered into juried art shows or sold to the public at large without the benefit of the customer knowing whose “art” they are actually purchasing. For me, creating art is a highly personal, extremely passionate way of expressing my most profound fears, loves, needs and wants. It is a sometimes painful journey of the past, present and future entwined.
Seeing a poorly executed copy of my work or that of a respected fellow artist is at best an invasion of personal space and at it’s worse a complete lack of respect for what it means to call ones self an artist. I will happily share my knowledge with those who ask with the intention of personal growth, and who are trying to cultivate their own “inner voice”, but to those who want to take a shortcut I would suggest looking inward for a better path to follow.
